Children's center receives Seewall installation

On a recent weekday, the lobby of the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center was crowded with children who had been taken from homes where they may have been abused.

The staff expects to see 1,400 of these children this year at the facility at 1061 King St. in Charleston.

One boy, about 8, was crying and trying to get out the front door. An older girl, maybe his sister, calmed him down and directed him toward a seat.

Being taken into a strange environment for evaluation can be traumatic for a child, especially one who has been abused. The lobby is full of books and toys to try to make the visit more pleasant. Trained counselors also are there to comfort the children.

One little girl who looked to be about 5 was sitting in front of a big cabinet moving tile magnets around. A video of a sea horse was playing above her on a screen in the cabinet. Soft classical music wafted from a set of speakers.

The installation where she was playing is called a Seewall. It's designed to amuse and comfort anxious children and parents. The Medical University of South Carolina has four of them. The children's center received one in November.

"What's so wonderful is watching the children interact with it," said Elizabeth Hocker, the center's executive director. "It helps add to the ambience of a place that's safe and secure and very, very happy. It also provides a lot of calming influence for the parents."

Seewalls are built and installed by Seewall Child, an organization based in Beaufort that "uses the power of art to transform the human spirit."

Hocker succeeded Libby Ralston when the center's founding director retired in November after 20 years. The Seewall was named the USS Libby Ralston in her honor.

"The first child into the center on the morning following your installation stood in front of the Seewall, threw up his hands and tilted his head skyward and said, 'Wow' and immediately began interacting and exploring your gift," Ralston said in a letter as director emeritus to Seewall Child last month. "An unexpected outcome has been the 'calming' effect the music has on all in the waiting room including staff who work in the waiting and reception area."

Seewall Child tries to give crisis centers, orphanages, special-need centers and child-based relief organizations "a creative tool to be utilized as a positive distraction from a stressful environment," according to organization's website. Seewall Child approached the children's center to see if it wanted one, Executive Director Olga Stamatiou said.

"We'd like to do more in Charleston," Stamatiou said.

Donations from the Joanna Foundation of Sullivan's Island, the Gehrken Family of Mount Pleasant, Sawgrass Technologies of Mount Pleasant, Vapor Apparel of Charleston, Every Day Gourmet of Mount Pleasant and Anne Buck and Jodi Knovak of Mount Pleasant helped pay for the unit.

The center also sold tiles for a mural that will be mounted on a wall in the lobby.

The center works with 39 partner agencies to evaluate children in Charleston and Berkeley counties for sexual or physical abuse or neglect and counsels them and their families.

"They can be healed, so they don't have to be scarred by this for the rest of their lives," Hocker said.

The SEEWALL  CHILD installation at Dee Norton is up and running!

WOW! What an impact our new addition makes to the lobby! We already have two teenage girls working on the puzzle so obviously the wall attracts children of all ages!

I also wish I could have sent you a picture of today’s first client when he came in and saw the Seewall! His face absolutely lit up! It would warm your heart and soul as it did ours. Thank you for working with us on this gift!

 MUSC CHILDREN"S HOSPITAL

The Seewall contributes to a child friendly environment that facilitates a decrease in anxiety and fear related to the hospital setting. The Seewall is a pioneer in this arena, thus allowing us to best meet the needs of our vulnerable patients. The Seewall will function as a powerful adjunct in reducing pain and anxiety in children with both acute and chronic painful conditions. The partnership between the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children’s Hospital and SEEWALL has resulted in an innovative, original way to provide comfort to children and their families during a stressful time. The audiovisual components assist in distraction during painful procedures. The Seewall acts as an adjunct to medical therapies to treat the pain, anxiety and stress associated with painful procedures. This inventive method of distraction provides soothing music and vivid pictures of an aquarium setting to spark the spirit of inquiry while providing as a passive means of diversion from their environment, which is often frightening. Children receiving intravenous lines for surgery, dressing changes to their badly burned body or undergoing other invasive procedures are delighted by the imaginative scenes on the Seewall with an escape from the procedure. The Seewall has been an asset to the MUSC Childrens Hospital, resulting in an imaginative and unprecedented device to alleviate pain and anxiety in children. We believe that a multi-modal approach provides the best outcomes for pediatric patients and the Seewall contributes to this method by stimulating the auditory and visual senses; sparking the imagination of pediatric patients.

Dear Olga Stamatiou and the folks at SEEWALL,

you have made a huge impact on the experience of our pediatric patients and their families as they wait for x-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and other imaging procedures in the Pediatric Radiology department @ MUSC.  When we were planning a “facelift” for our portion of the radiology department, SEEWALL designed and constructed an interactive wall unit with streaming video and touch screen to fit our waiting room.  Every time I walk by our waiting area there are several kids (and their parents) playing with the touch screen. The kids are having fun while learning, and best of all, are relieved of the anxiety, which a trip to the hospital invariably brings. I cannot tell you how many hospital employees, including resident physicians and faculty, have stopped by and raved about our “SEEWALL.” Our departmental chairman was so impressed we had an additional interactive unit inserted in the pediatric CT/MR waiting area when it was recently upgraded.  SEEWALL CHILD has also worked with us to develop beautiful artwork for our walls and signage to enhance the aesthetics of the hallways of the pediatric radiology section.

In addition to developing outstanding products, the SEEWALL people are a pleasure to work with.  In all my interactions, they have been compassionate, enthusiastic, punctual, and always responsive to our needs and input while being very creative. I enthusiastically recommend SEEWALL to you.

Sincerely,

Over the last several years I have had the pleasure to work with Stamatiou and the SEWALL  CHILD STUDIOS program.  We successfully installed a unit in the Children’s Hospital lobby and it was an instant hit with the children and their families.  The music and motion of the fish have a wonderful affect on all that see it.  We also have a mobile unit that has been used in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.  We have found that children that might have transplants or other cardiac surgeries tend to be more relaxed when they can watch the fish.

Recently we renovated two waiting rooms for the Children’s Radiology areas and included one of their pieces for each.  They were an instant hit for the kids.  As you know, being in a hospital is hard enough for adults.  It is very scary for children.  The SEEWALL helps us to calm patients so that we can effectively diagnose illnesses.

We look forward to working with the SEEWALL program going forward.  Eventually we would like to have a unit in every patient room and a large unit in the Atrium.  Rocco and Olga have been very dedicated in perfecting their art for our hospital.

It is with great pleasure that I recommend SEEWALL STUDIOS to you as a partner.  I can only see that collaboration making both organizations stronger.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dear  Olga,
I wanted you to know that the Hyundai people really like the Seewall.
We toured them this morning.  The best news is this.

We had the portable unit in the lobby for the Hyundai people to see.
We had just brought it back to my office and we got a call from the
Pediatric Cardiac intensive care unit.  They wanted to know if they
could use it with a five year old child who had a heart transplant last
night.  He had been on a Berlin heart for a week waiting.  I set it up
in his room and both he and the parents were just amazed.  The staff
love it and it will stay down there for a while.  You two have made a
huge difference for us and these children.  Thanks!
John
